"Exigi monumentum aere perennius. Non omnis moriar multaque pars mei vitaberit" (Horace, Odes and Epodes III, 30)

"I reared a monument more lasting than bronze. When I'll die it will not be completely, as part of me will continue to live"

I'm proud having been able to contribute, almost since the beginning, and with many others, to an everlasting monument of human knowledge. An ever-growing monument freely available to everybody, everywhere, anytime.

What we have done for ourselves, dies with us; what we have done for others and the world remains and is immortal. Albert Pike

"We live in a world that is increasingly focused on what skills and knowledge you have, as opposed to what formal qualifications like degrees you have." [1]

Hi, I'm JoJan (username), I'm retired and I live in Belgium.

I'm a native Dutch speaker, but I'm also fluent in English, rather good in French and can make myself be understood in German. I used to know a good deal of Latin, but I have forgotten most of it (however more and more fragments are gradually coming back).

My main interest was originally the translation of English common names of Flora and Fauna into their Dutch equivalents.

Therefore I'm constantly struggling with the ever changing taxonomy of these plants and animals.

I have more than a thousand pages of Fauna and Flora, built up over many years, to be put gradually on Wikipedia.

This is a time-consuming task.

Besides all this, my interests are broad : among them astronomy, cosmology, chemistry, computers, translation (English -> Dutch and vice versa) and reading a lot.

Besides writing new articles (mainly plants, biographies, articles about art, and Wikipedia:WikiProject Gastropods), I have been patrolling the 'Recent Changes', looking for anything that may interest me and needs editing, especially stubs. I have been adding or editing taxoboxes to many pages. Anyway, I intervene whenever I think I can make a positive contribution. I also have taken an interest in writing biographies of biologists who were the authors of new species. I have also been uploading several thousands of photos (many of which were enhanced by me) and over 15,000 photos to the Commons.

I started contributing

[edit]

on April 9, 2004. First by editing someone else's work. Shortly thereafter I started writing my own entries. And I haven't stopped since. At the moment I have written several thousand articles (new or major contributions), which I put on my watchlist, but there are many, many more that I have contributed to and that I even didn't bother to put on my watchlist. Since my articles mainly cover science or art, most of them took major research, checking and rechecking before uploading. Therefore, the number of articles cannot actually be taken as a criterion for contribution, but it should be the effort in writing those articles that should count. Quality before quantity.

In the List of Wikipedians by number of edits, I was listed as number 369 in July 2024.

In the Wikipedia:List of Wikipedians by number of recent edits I am listed as nr. 649 on March 11, 2008

I was nominated administrator on 25 June 2005. I reached my 10,000 edit on 12.12.2005; my 25,000 edit on 20 May 2008: my 35,000 edit on 4 July 2010; 45,000 edits on 14 April 2011, 55,555 edits on 20 May 2012, 90,000 edits on 14 September 2016; 100,000 edits in May 2017.

I met Jimbo Wales and had a nice chat with him, Angela and Anthere at the Wikimeeting at Rotterdam on 27.11.04. I made some good Dutch acquaintances, fine people such as GerardM, DanielM, Oscar, André Engels and many others. It is all too clear, the nl.wikipedia is in good hands and will prosper. I'm hoping to meet them again in the future.

WikiProject

[edit]

Wikipedia:WikiProject Gastropods was started by me on May 10, 2004. For a long time I've been the only participant in this enormous undertaking (about 100,000 species !). Initially I have been working there mostly on the Thecosomata and the Gymnosomata. At the moment I'm trying to describe as many species as possible.
